About the Jewish Calendar
The Jewish calendar (also known as the Hebrew calendar) is a lunisolar calendar used to determine the dates of Jewish holidays, Torah readings, and daily prayers. Each month begins with a new moon, and leap years add a 13th month (Adar II) seven times every 19 years to stay aligned with the solar year.
This monthly calendar for Seoul displays both Gregorian and Hebrew dates side by side, along with:
- Shabbat candle lighting times — 18 minutes before sunset
- Havdalah times — calculated as 72 minutes after sunset (Rabbeinu Tam opinion); 8.5° (GRA) and 16.1° opinions also available on the Zmanim page

- Weekly Torah portion (Parashat HaShavua) — shown every Shabbat

Hebrew Calendar Months
The Hebrew calendar has 12 months in a regular year and 13 in a leap year (when Adar II is added). Each month begins with the new moon (Rosh Chodesh). The months do not correspond exactly to Gregorian months — they shift because the lunar year (about 354 days) is shorter than the solar year (365 days).

Leap years add a 13th month, Adar II (Adar Sheni), to keep Passover in spring as required by the Torah. Leap years occur in years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, and 19 of a 19-year cycle. In a leap year, Purim is celebrated in Adar II.
