About the Hebrew Calendar

The Hebrew calendar is a lunisolar system: months follow the lunar cycle (29–30 days), while years are synchronized with the solar year through the addition of a leap month (Adar II) in years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, and 19 of a 19-year cycle. This ensures that Passover always falls in spring and Sukkot in autumn, as required by the Torah.

Days in the Jewish calendar begin at sunset, following the Genesis account "and there was evening, and there was morning." Therefore, Shabbat and holidays begin the evening before the date listed in secular calendars.
