About the Jewish Calendar

The Jewish calendar (also known as the Hebrew calendar) is a lunisolar calendar used to determine the dates of Jewish holidays, Torah readings, and daily prayers. Each month begins with a new moon, and leap years add a 13th month (Adar II) seven times every 19 years to stay aligned with the solar year.

This monthly calendar for Vancouver displays both Gregorian and Hebrew dates side by side, along with:

  • Shabbat candle lighting times — 18 minutes before sunset
  • Havdalah times — calculated as 72 minutes after sunset (Rabbeinu Tam opinion); 8.5° (GRA) and 16.1° opinions also available on the Zmanim page
  • Jewish holidays — including Yom Tov, fast days, and modern Israeli holidays
  • Weekly Torah portion (Parashat HaShavua) — shown every Shabbat
  • Rosh Chodesh — the beginning of each new Hebrew month
  • Omer count — during the period between Pesach and Shavuot

Use the .ics download button above to import these times into your Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or Outlook. The file contains 6 months of candle lighting and Havdalah times for Vancouver.

Hebrew Calendar Months

The Hebrew calendar has 12 months in a regular year and 13 in a leap year (when Adar II is added). Each month begins with the new moon (Rosh Chodesh). The months do not correspond exactly to Gregorian months — they shift because the lunar year (about 354 days) is shorter than the solar year (365 days).
